The ruins of the complex of the two early Christian basilicas were found and excavated by the Italian archaeologist Luciano Laurenzi. They are located in Agios Stefanos of Kos, within Kefalos bay, really close to the sea. The basilicas of Agios Stefanos are even more impressive than other early Christian temples of the island of Kos, due to their size and their conservation. Their construction is dating back to 469-554 A.D., during the period between the two devastating earthquakes that hit the island. Actually, the second earthquake destroyed the monument. Maintenance operations of the basilicas and the mosaic floors are carried out on regular basis. Cultural events are occasionally organized in the courtyard.
