Located on the foothills of mount Olympus and “embraced” by the river Elassonitis, Elassona is the biggest dairy products centre in Greece.
Olympus is Elassona’s background giving a sense of awe and supremacy to the visitor. Winter is the ideal season for a visit in the area that is covered by a white sheet of snow and looks like it has just jumped out of a fairytale.
Typical for the area is the feta cheese that managed to gain a Protected Geographical Indication certification and is now sold all over the world.
The monastery of the Virgin Mary Olympiotissa is also famous. The visitor must also pay a visit to the museum for the battle of Sarantaporo as well as to the Chantzigogos Chani that served as a military camp for the Greeks during the battle of 1912 against the Turks.
