In picturesque Karitsa, 250 meters above the verdant slopes of Kissavos, the Chestnut Festival takes place the 3rd week of October every year. 13 years ago a group of women from Karitsa needed to promote the production of chestnuts, first at the prefecture level. They started an event with exhibits of the product in the form of fresh, grilled and boiled chestnuts and with the presentation of photographic material from the manufacturing process. Then, with the passage of time, the event was supplemented by lectures of scientists and researchers in order to improve the production of the product. Gradually this event developed and today is a major cultural event.
In Chestnut Festival visitors have the opportunity to attend musical events and theater performances, to experience the traditional feast of the region, to visit exhibitions of traditional farming tools, to taste exceptional quality and flavor roast and boiled chestnuts. Also, visitors are given souvenir clays with junta chestnuts.
