Although the year of its construction is still unknown, it is the most recent mosque than all the others that exist in Larisa. It was used by the Muslims of Larisa as a place of worship till 1924 and from 1939 till 1941 it housed a small archaeological collection as well as the municipal library. Until the January of 2012 Geni Tzami housed the Archeological Museum of Larisa that is currently being transferred to the new Byzantine and Archaeological Museum of Larisa that will open for public in 2014. However, when construction is complete, Geni Tzami will continue operating as an exhibition.
