The beaches of Limnos do have shells; hares and partridges run out in the roads, while the scenery seems untouched by the fast paced life of the 21st century. Limnos is the eighth largest island of Greece located in the center of the Northern Aegean Sea, at almost equal distance from the Hellespont and Mount Athos and belongs to the Prefecture of Lesvos. The name Limnos, which remained unaltered throughout the centuries, has probably a Phoenician root and it means white. Its land is volcanic and its morphology consists mostly of flat treeless plains, while it never fails to surprise with a mini Sahara hidden among its hills. The vast crops, mainly of grain and vineyards, create wonderful patterns all year round, from the green ones during the spring to the golden ones with scattered bales in the summer. The island is not particularly known for its forests, since the only one found here is petrified. The human presence on Limnos counts more than 10.000 years. As shown by the findings in Poliochni, Limnos can take credit for the emergence of an urban organization with a Parliament, which cites to an early form of democracy 5000 years ago. Nowadays, the island has a population of 17.000 habitants. The trump card of Limnos, which makes it beautiful, attractive and distinct, is the countless beaches, which rightfully belong to the most beautiful ones in Greece. The undisturbed natural landscape of Limnos consists of many burnets, thyme, oregano as well as small aromatic plants, among which lair countless wild rabbits, the insular partridge "alectoris chukar", impressive flamingoes, hoopoes and long-legged buzzards. Limnos has a culinary tradition that gives off an aroma fined with Asia Minor influences offering unforgettable moments of taste next to the sea. You will taste the famous aftoudia (pasta), flomari (handmade pasta), melichloro or melipasto cheese accompanied by the Muscat wine of Limnos.
Moreover, Limnos is a peaceful island with delicious products and also the ideal choice if you want to enjoy the tranquility of nature and the crystal clear waters in an alternative holiday destination.
