These lakes are located in the eastern part of Limnos, near the village Kontopouli. The extent of Alyki is over 1400 acres, a salty lake communicating with the sea via a small canal. In winter, it is filled with seawater, which evaporates during the summer leaving behind salt of excellent quality. Chortarolimni located near Alyki is a brackish lake of 550 acres in extent, which is completely dry during the summer, but it looks like a blue painting on a green background the rest of the year. Both lakes compose an important wetland and on their shores wander around Ruddy Shelducks, duck hawks (small falcons) and pink flamingos, black-winged stilts (long-legged birds with straight beaks) and avocets (long-legged birds with beaks curved upwards). It may not be the exact definition of a lake but they certainly compose a wonderful natural attraction, especially if you find yourself there, when the pink hues of the flamingos are reflected in the water.
