Hephaestus and Limnos: According to the legend, Limnos is inextricably linked to Hephaestus. In particular, Zeus after an intense fight he had with his son, Hephaestus, darted the second one from Olympus. The god of fire and metal was falling for days, until he finally landed on the island of Limnos, and thereafter he remained a cripple. There the inhabitants nursed and accommodated him, and Hephaestus built a workshop in the volcano "Mosychlos", where he taught them the art of metalworking to thank them. In honor of the metallurgist god, the ancient Greeks named the city "Hephaestia". Moreover, the legend says that Hephaestus had a child with the nymph Kaviro, Kadmilos, who also had three sons; the "Kaviri" or else "Cancers”. These chthonic spirits of the sea, the earth and fire were represented by the residents of Limnos with the hammer and the tongs of the metallurgist. As a matter of fact, the legend contains several real facts, since Limnos is characterized both by a volcanic ground composition and a broad metallurgic tradition.
