From Talea Mountains (Mount Koukoulonas), a range located northeast of Rethymno, emerges the myth of Talos. According to Cretan mythology, Talos was a bronze giant made by Vulcan and offered to King Minoas as a gift. Talos was assigned to guard the Cretan coastline and, therefore, he went the round of the island 3 times a day (or according to Plato 3 times a year). This giant monster set upon the foreign visitors by throwing rocks and wood, while he finished them off by burning them or by hugging them with his burning body. The only underbelly of Talos was his talus and only if someone pulled off the nail that was there, he would be able to eliminate him. According to the myth, this nail blocked the liquid that flew inside his body and made him omnipotent. The Argonauts took advantage of his underbelly, and when they were in Crete, they managed to remove the nail, since Talos was pinned down by the god-like intervention of Medea.
