On the hill of Paleokastro stands the most popular and atmospheric attraction of Rethymno, the fortress of Fortezza. Its construction began in 1573 and was completed in 1580 by the Venetians. The structure of the fortress made it particularly vulnerable to raiders, something which played an important role in its occupation by the Turks in 1646. The overall construction of the castle was completed in the beginning of the 20th century, while the Turks did not intervene much in its structure. Nowadays, the precinct of the castle has been preserved intact, but only a small part of the buildings has been preserved in the inside of the fortress. During your perambulation, you will see ruins of the public buildings, powder magazines, bastions, cisterns, ruins of private dwellings etc. Nowadays, in the restored buildings of Fortezza are hosted several cultural events, and here also lies the small municipal theater within a space that adds a special atmosphere to the local proceedings.
