Likely less known compared with the neighboring prefectures, but equally beautiful, with Psiloritis standing in its center, cool green ravines, picturesque villages and lovely beaches, the Prefecture of Rethymno welcomes its guests offering a rich variety of holiday options. From several organized tourist resorts like Agia Galini up to agro tourism accommodation, but also yoga centers on quiet beaches, all are embraced by the rich nature of this region.
The capital of the prefecture, Rethymno, built next to a wide sandy beach of the northern coast, with a picturesque Venetian harbor, gathers the largest part of the population and facilities. From the 5th century, there is evidence of the existence of the town of Rethymno with a highly developed trade. In the Byzantine period, it did not develop much while it was conquered by the Venetians in 1204. During the Venetian Empire, many Rethymnians came to the front in the literary world. Its heyday lasted until 1669, when the Turkish conquerors came to the island and remained until 1897, when Crete was liberated.
With Anogia nesting on the slopes of Psiloritis and nurturing not only the music but also the tradition of Crete, with the unforgettable Preveli beach, where Kourtaliotis meets the Libyan Sea, the historic monastery of Arkadi, the colorful valley of Amari and many more beauties, this region maintains its own genuine Cretan identity, and the love for the island and its tradition. Several residents of the region, mainly in the mountainous villages, wear traditional costumes and speak with a distinctive accent for which they are famous across the island.
Last but not least, the Cretan hospitality is also evident here since it is most likely that the locals will offer you homemade raki and welcome you like they already know you.
