Pyrgos is located in the center of the island, about half an hour from Pythagorio and 50 minutes from the city of Samos. It is a small lush village and a focal point for the mountainous villages of the island. The most typical elements of the island are the old, well maintained houses with colorful windows and beautiful narrow streets full of flowers. You will also see the beautiful historical church of Agios Georgios in the village’s square. Every year on the 14th and 15th of August the Assumption of the Virgin is celebrated with traditional music, dance and plenty of Samian wine. The day before the feast, the locals prepare the traditional “keskeki”, which is made of meat, wheat, onions and oil boiled at low heat all night long and is shared to the people in the morning, in the churchyard after the church service. You should definitely try it, if you are in Pyrgos that day!
