The Monastery of Panagia Spiliani is located above Pythagorio, in a short distance from the Tunnel of Eupalinos. Inside the small church, in the cave, is the icon of Panagia (Virgin Mary), which, according to the myth, returned miraculously to the island while attempting to carry it to Patmos. The locals claimed that it fell off the boat carrying it, broke into five pieces and returned to Samos. Inside the cave there are ruins of an early Christian church, as this point was a place of worship since ancient times and continued to be a place of worship during the Christian times. Next to the chapel with the marble picture of Virgin Mary there is holy water, which the local fishermen and sailors used to drink before they embarked. During the World War II the network of caves around Spiliani were used as a shelter during the German bombings. Getting up to the monastery you can enjoy the great view of Pythagorio and the coast of Asia Minor. In the entrance there are two temples: the Esodia tis Theotokou (Presentation of Virgin Mary) and Agios Georgios (Saint George).
