The Monastery of Megali Panagia, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is located near the village Mylous, ascending from the valley of the Chora towards the inland of the island. It is celebrated on the 23rd of August, on the novena of the Virgin Mary, and many locals and foreigners visit it with gifts. It was established in 1586 by the monks Neilos and Dionysios. It was the base of the fighters of the island during the 1821 Greek Revolution. Nowadays, the visitors can see the spaces of the monastery and the cells of the monks.
