Once you cross Evinos River and continue towards Messolonghi, on the hill to your left you will see a vast plain and on your right the ruins of the once glorious Kalydona. Nowadays, you can see a part of the theatre, the base and a part of the road that led to the temple of Lafria Artemis and Apollo, while on the eastern part a tomb has been found whose stone gate is housed in the archaeological museum of Agrinio. It must have been established during the 3000 B.C and reports of this ancient town are already made by Homer. According to Stravonas, Kalydona and Plevrona were the most beautiful towns of Aetolia. During the Peloponnesian War, Kalydona was independent, but after the battle of Lefktra it returned to the jurisdiction of Aetolia. After the defeat by Phillip V the town was destroyed but managed to regain its past glory. In 48 B.C the residents resisted to the expansive plans of the Romans. Finally, it surrendered to the legions of Julius Caesar, who destroyed her completely in 30 B.C., moved its residents in the newly-built town of Nikopoli and its treasures in Patra. Since then, Kalydona was never heard again.
