They are also called “Ksiromero” (Greek word for “dry place”), because of their limited vegetation. They stretch on the western bank of Acheloos up until the Ionian Sea. Its peaks are the Ipsili Korfi (1589 m.), Boumistos (1577 m.) and Perganti (1423 m.), where the famous therapeutic springs of Korpi are located. In its southern part it ends up to the peak of Veloutsa (928 m.) above Astakos.
Due to the rocky ground it is not possible to maintain large amounts of water. That is the reason why the vegetation is limited with the exception of the fir forest of Boumistos, the oak trees and bushes at lower altitudes. The scenery is harsh, and so are the residents that tend to leave the villages of Akarnanika for the bigger towns.
Apart from the therapeutic springs of Korpi, on mount Akarnanika you will also find the baths of Trifos, the cave of Konopina, the monastery of Romvi, ancient and byzantine monuments. There are paths that cross the whole mountain and its history goes back to the time when warriors used to live there. However, they do not belong to the most crowded hiking routes.
If you oversee the harsh look of the scenery and choose to get to know them better, you will meet the shepherds who are most likely to invite you for a treat in their cabin.
