This settlement lives up to its name since its population of 2.031 inhabitants can feel nothing but lucky (‘tycheroi’ in Greek), living in such a fertile and beautiful area. 24km away from Soufli and to its south, Tychero is evolving to a beautiful little state considering the past year’s rapid development. During the Roman times, the great bridge of ancient Egnatia Street that connected the West and the East was built here.
As you enter the town of Tychero, you will meet a small artificial lake swamped in nature which proves how beneficial human intervention can be when it contributes to nature’s work. At its banks stands the traditional guesthouse, made of wood and stone while the sport centers of the town are located across it as well as the village’s pool. Every August, the Youth Festival of Tychero is organized here which hosts known Greek artists and people from neighboring areas also attend it. At the forecourt a little fare is set up where the locals offer dishes, with ‘loukoumades’, which are extremely popular. Breeding and training of horses takes place at the Jockey Club of Tychero which is housed at the sports center and offers riding lessons, organizes horseback or carriage rides, and provides therapeutic programs addressed to people who are physically, mentally or emotionally challenged. For the more adventurous visitors, exciting activities are organized by a private company that has its base here, such as canoe, mountain biking, canoe kayak, rafting, hiking and 4x4 routes. Also, from mid-August, i.e. when the hunting period begins, the area attracts many lovers of the sport.
Tychero’s square is adorned by a delicate fountain followed by a pedestrian precinct, ideal for your nightly outings. Traditional coffee houses, taverns and coffee shops will welcome you and in the small and sweet pastry, reminiscent of times when young couples went out on dates for paste, you will taste the exceptional traditional syrupy sweets. In late August the village’s festival is conducted at the square during which dancers will induct you to the Thracian dances. Do not hesitate to mingle in the crowd and dance your heart out.
