In Greece’s northeast end, the southeast end of Europe, is located the prefecture of Evros, which borders to the north with Bulgaria and to the east with Turkey. It is a crossroad between the East and the West, which is also its main feature. From the very start of your arrival you will witness the co-existence of two very different nations and civilizations which are yet in-wrought in such a way that they end up creating a whole new culture, unraveling before your eyes. You will be astonished by the language, with its scattered Turkish expressions – «cok guzel»(meaning very beautiful) you will hear the locals calling the girls – like the food – with the famous «imam» which was named after the Turkish title ‘Imam’, and the Christian churches next to the Muslim mosques which show the grandeur of the human soul that can overcome all hatred.
With an extent of 4.242 km² and a population of 149.354, the region of Evros is administratively separated in 13 counties, with Alexandroupolis being its capital. To the west the mount tops of Rhodope stand tall and proud and to the east the plains of Eastern Thrace and the green valleys that are formed along the river, create a vast and exceptionally fertile plain, used by the residents to cultivate mostly cotton, wheat, beetroots as well as the much requested Thracian melon. In the natural wealth of the area, the biotopes of Dadia Forest and the Delta of Evros can be added, which are of great importance to the world natural heritage. The unique biodiversity of this area offers the opportunity to the visitor, traveler, hiker or cyclist, to find himself in places of great natural beauty, with routes in the verdant pine forests of the mountains. Images, scents and sounds all contribute in creating an «out of time» sensation which will overwhelm you. Along the way you will meet animals and birds, free in their natural environment and you will discover the area’s mystifying atmosphere.
Do not be surprised by the sound of some shepherd’s flute, since here livestock and agriculture constitute the basic employment sections of the population, which infuse an impression of «old Greece» in the area. Ordinary people will welcome you with a smile and impress you with their social skills. Hospitable and easy-going, the Thracians will soon invite you to their party for a drink of -what else but a glass of ‘malamatina’(traditional wine). Let them suggest some traditional plate and be introduced to the local cuisine which is considered to be the Dionysian side of Greek gastronomy.
