Located 58km to the east of Soufli, the village of Roussa, counts today 305 inhabitants, the majority of which are Pomaks.  The Pomaks are Muslims, characterized by their authenticity although their historical origins are unclear.
The history of the area goes back in very distant times, as the megalithic ‘dolmen’ graves indicate.  Dated from 900 BC, they were discovered one kilometer outside Roussa, along with a rock (dated between 1100 and 900 BC), which had engravings depicting sketches of people, birds and reptiles.
