This city is built in the place where the ancient Traianoupolis was located, 13km to the east of Alexandroupolis. The ancient city was founded in the early 2nd century AC by the Roman Emperor Trajan and constituted the greatest center of ecclesiastic and social life of the southwest Thrace from the 4th until the 13th century AC. Only a little section of the city’s defensive walls, built from Justinian, have been saved till today. The building of Hana built in 1385, which was used by travelers of the Roman Egnatia Street as a guesthouse, is also preserved in a very good condition.
Today’s Traianoupolis is well known throughout Greece and abroad for its thermal baths that were apparently used since a very long time ago, for hygiene and therapeutic purposes. It attracts visitors due to the notable Information Centre of Evros’ Delta that operates here.
