Just outside the village of Kornofolia, in a 2km distance, the monastery of Panagia Portaitissa or Kornofolia Monastery is located, which was founded before the 17th century. Before entering the monastery women are required to wear one of the skirts provided. At its interior, you will find a copy of the icon of Panagia of Agio Oros (Mount Athos), as well as the remains of Agios Haralambos’s leg. In the building compound which hosts the monastery you will find a shop that sells works of the monks, springs from which you can procure holy water, as well as a children’s playground at the sleek garden for our young visitors. The monastery celebrates on August 23. During this day, believers from the surrounding areas and not only, come to pray. The multiple destructions that the monastery has suffered during the Greco-Turkish wars did not stop its service. In fact, in 1922 many refugees were hosted here. According to local testimonials, monks were slaughtered while during a Turkish invasion a nun in her effort to protect the icon of Panagia had hidden it behind the door (‘porta’ in Greek). Hence, the name “Panagia Portaitissa”.
