Springing from the Bulgarian Rila Range and specifically from Mount Skomio, Evros constitutes a natural border between Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria ending in the Thracian Sea after a 530km travel, 230km of which are within the territory of Greece. It is the biggest Greek river and the second biggest river in Europe, right after Danube. Along its path, it gives the homonym prefecture its beneficial properties, creating a fertile area which the residents exploit agriculturally, while even today the eldest recount stories from the time when its water was used as potable when the water supplies ran short. Fishing has been banned for the protection of the river’s fish. The recent presence of Amazonian piranhas in the river disrupted the local community and rumors did not take long to spread. Some spoke of a piranha migration wave and the more imaginative considered the fact part of a conspiracy aiming at the deterrence of the current of immigrants! Of course scientists rejected such theories, believing that some owner of a tropical aquarium threw the piranhas in the river.
In the area to the south of Feres, where the river debouches, the notorious Delta of Evros is formed, which the Turks call it ‘Giaour Ada-a’, meaning ‘Island of the Infidels’. With a range of 95.000 acres, the area is protected by the Ramsar Convention, since it constitutes one of the most important European wetlands and hosts tens of species of birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. For one to understand the place’s value, one should merely know that from the 422 species of birds recorded living in Greece, 316 are found here.
Your perambulation in this beautiful landscape, which will enchant you with its colors, can be organized in the Municipal Tourist Center of Feres, from where the most exciting experience of your life will begin. In boats called ‘plaves’, you will get a 2-2,5h tour at the river’s Delta, escorted by guides who will make sure you will learn anything you might want about the area. The Delta can be accessed from the area of Traianoupolis. There, just before the village Loutra, you will find the Evros Delta Information Center which will be responsible for your updating and your 1-1.5hour boat trip.
