Overlooking modern Argostoli, on a hill about 1 km from the city, the remains of Krani, one of the four main city-states of ancient Kefalonia, still dominate the landscape. Part of the mighty Cyclopean fortifications of the ancient citadel survive to this day. One level down are traces of a temple dedicated to the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, according to an inscription found in the area. The site is constantly visited, and admission is free.
