Although built as a secondary fortress of Venetian Kefalonia, its position amid the unique beauty of the Assos peninsula makes it one of the island’s most popular and impressive sights. True enough, not much remains of the fortifications, but it isn’t really the ruins of the castle that continue to draw visitors year after year. The climb may be paired before or after by a swim in the crystal clear waters of the homonymous beach, or a rest in the shade of the pines. The somewhat difficult ascent along the cobblestone walkway may seem overwhelming at first. Bring a bottle of water for the less hardy of the group. The breathtaking views of the white cliffs of the opposite coast set the tone for the culmination of the unique experience, namely the view from the top. As difficult as the climb may be, equally dazzling is the sight once you reach the top.
