Undoubtedly the most special and elegant of the five lighthouses on the island. Located in Lassi, only a few kilometers from Argostoli, its presence alone seems an enigma. While remotely resembling an ancient mausoleum, the white light emitted every 3 seconds indicates the actual use. The history of this exceptional lighthouse is rather interesting: Constructed in 1823 by the British governor of the island, due to lack of materials it was built upon the foundations of a windmill (hence the circular shape), and the 20 columns that surround it have been the ideal solution to keep the old building standing. Although destroyed in the great earthquake, it has been faithfully rebuilt according to the original plans. It is an example of how an idea combined with the need can create a small miracle of architecture. Since its construction, passing boats are warned about the risk of grounding on land, while its unique architecture blends beautifully with the surrounding nature offering an idyllic location for romantic walks. An ideal time to visit is at sunset, when the sun goes down behind the snow-white columns, and Liksouri opposite tentatively lights its early lights.
