One of the darkest points in the history of the island is the execution of the Italian division Aqui during World War II by the Germans. In the fall of 1943, when the Mussolini-Hitler alliance dissolved, the Italians who had been in possession of the island until then resisted heroically, refusing to surrender to their former allies, and for this paid the ultimate price. The monument bears an inscription in both Greek and Italian, in memory of the fallen and more generally in memory of this traumatic war. Located in the vicinity of Fanari, a hill near Argostoli, it deserves the respects of each visitor.
