Located in the northern part of the island, 30 km from the capital, Argostoli, it is without a doubt the island's trademark. An extravaganza whose image graces nearly any travel agency, it rightly ranks high on the lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The beach does not need any special introduction: it is an absolute must for every visitor. Whether going for a swim, or a commemorative photo from above, don’t leave the island without having paid a visit. A perennial recipient of the Blue Flag award, it’s not just for the crystal-clear waters, but also for the superbly organized amenities. Exercise appropriate caution as you descend the hill approaching the beach. There is plenty of free parking available, a canteen where small children will reliably ‘scream’ for an ice cream, umbrellas and sun beds for those sensitive to the sun and also plenty of room for those who want to ’torture’ a little more melanin into their skin. Most of the beach has small white pebbles, perfect for those of us not so fond of the feeling of sand sticking to our feet-and indeed we are many. But like everything beautiful, it is not without its own risks: due to sediment in suspension, the turquoise waters have an opaque translucence (you may as well leave the mask and flippers in the car). Also, because the water deepens abruptly in some places, you must be cautious, especially with young children. That said, it is the ideal place for an unforgettable summer sunset that will present a beautiful, if somewhat wistful close to our visit to Kefalonia.
