This island is located is located south of Cape Goudouras and was well-known for the production of Tyrian purple, the special coloring substance, derived from the gland of a mollusk, which lived in a sea-shell. Due to the trade of Tyrian purple, the island prospered during the Minoan and the Greco-Roman period. A settlement was discovered with a villa, which had eight rooms and a specialized workshop for processing Tyrian purple. A stone theater was found nearby, which could fit a thousand of people, a large part of which is destroyed. Excavations have also discovered the public baths, built by the Romans with all the typical features of a Roman bath. Moreover, there is a temple, most of which has also been destroyed, but some parts from the statue of a deity have been preserved. On the island, one can see many water tanks with pipes channeling water from the springs. This archaeological site is available for visiting it upon personal request.
