Within close distance from Sitia is located the monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) built in the Gorge of Agion Panton, inside of which exercitants’ caves are found. It resembles a small settlement numerous cells. On the 15^th of August, lots of believers come to the monastery for the feast of Virgin Mary. The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos and Agios Georgios. Six old cells of medieval architecture are preserved in the monastery. Nowadays, the monastery is almost abandoned and is open to the public on the 15^th of August, its honorific feast day.
