It was built in the 13th century and played a significant role during the revolutions against the Venetians and the Turks. However, the monastery was abandoned for a while and began its revival just in 1992. Currently, it is not inhabited by monks, but opens for services only on the day of its honorific feast. It is dedicated to the Genesio Theotokou (Birth of Virgin Mary) (Sept. 8), but celebrates on the 15^th of August. It is located 4km east of village Meseleri in Ierapetra.
