It is a relatively new museum, which opened in 1970 to host the archaeological findings from the eastern part of Crete dated from the Neolithic period to the Greek-Roman times. The exhibition includes more than 1500 vessels, many bronze and gold objects, which are considered to be among the oldest in Crete, as well as remnants from the Minoan burial-ground of Agia Fotia. The museum has 8 exhibition halls, arranged in rectangular shape, and a preservation studio.
