Dikteon Andron is one of the most spectacular caves on the island. It has impressive complexes of stalagmites and stalactites and a wide interior space. It is located in Lasithi Plateau at approximately 1025m in altitude and covers an extent of 2200m2. You can access the cave via an uphill stone paved trail in about 15 minutes from Psichros village. The cave consists of small and bigger chambers and has a lake in its interior. The most known myth associated with the cave is the one that mentions the birth of Zeus in it, while, a second one, less known, speaks of the Harpies, the mythical creatures that lived in the cave. Beyond the speleologistical interest, many ancient findings have been excavated, which indicate that the cave was used during the Minoan times as a place of worship and for burials. Many species of bats and rock doves nestle in this cave.
