It is a really impressive cave, although not easy to access, since it takes an hour hiking from Kato Zakros or a quarter if you approach by boat. It is one of the largest caves in Crete with a length of 310m and an extent of about 4.5 acres. It is rich and impressive with stalagmites and stalactites, large chambers and a declivitous ground. Several traces of habitation from the Neolithic era have been found in Pelekiton cave and this is where tufa comes from, which was used in the construction of Zakros Palace. A lake is located in the back of the cave, in which numerous bats nestle.
