This particular lake has been designated as a National Park and is the second largest wetland in South Greece, even though it is an artificial lake and was built just in 1985. It covers a pretty large area and hosts a large number of migrant birds that had disappeared from the island, while some of which are at risk of extinction, like the Ferruginous Duck and the Black Stork. Its main purpose is to supply the needs of cultivation in the area.
