Sitia Range is the most eastern range of the island and is, in fact, divided into two ranges, the range of Thripti in the west and the range of Zakros in the east. The highest peak is located in Thripti Range and is called Afentis Estavromenos. The mountains of Thripti have luxuriant vegetation and many native species. From the Thripti plateau start two imposing gorges, the gorge of Ha and Mesonas, while other gorges located on its slopes and covered in pine trees are the gorges of Milonas, Pefkon and Orino or the gorge Kokkinon Petaloudon (Red Butterflies). The gorgeous, small, mountain villages are known for the traditional Cretan hospitality. On the other hand, the mountains of Zakros are bare, with poor vegetation and bold cliffs. Many villages worth visiting are also located here. The most known village of the area is Ano Zakros.
