This is a museum dedicated to several aspects of Cretan tradition with over 5.000 exhibits hosted in an impressive well-preserved building of the 17th century. A large part of its exhibits have been donated by the inhabitants.
Its permanent collection includes 5 different themed rooms, the first of which presents the telary tradition of Crete through materials such as cotton, silk, wool and flax, which were used in the production of rugs, towels, tablecloths and other. The second room is dedicated to the great tradition of embroidery in Crete, with special emphasis on lace and its knitting techniques. The tradition of basketry and pottery in Rethymno is displayed in the third room, where the visitor learns both the materials used (chisel, wheat, and willow) as well as the techniques. In the collections of ceramics, there are different kinds of vessels depending on their use, such as pots for oil, water, honey, wine and raki. In the fourth hall, one can see the traditional crops, the tools used, the methods of harvesting and producing the Rethymnian bread. The museum tour ends with the fifth room, dedicated to the old traditional occupations such as the farrier, the coppersmith and the knife-maker.
