This is the most famous beach in the south part of Rethymno and one of the most beautiful in Crete. Kourtaliotis, the river that passes through the homonym gorge, the rare palm trees that used to adorn its banks as well as the sandy beach overlooking the vast sea compose a magical landscape. The palm grove was partially destroyed by a great fire, however young palm trees have already begun to sprout, and Preveli will gain again its unique natural beauty. The beach is organized not only with umbrellas and sun beds, but also with canoes, so you can enjoy a pleasant route down the river. Walking on the river bank is just as magical as going down the river, moving through the gorge till the point where the rocks create a natural border that terminates the trail into the gorge. The beach can be accessed by car, following the road to Plakias, where shortly after Lefkogia you can follow the signs to Lake Preveli until you find yourself in a large parking lot where a path starts leading to the beach. By following this route, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent view from above, but it will take you approximately 15 '-20 ' to reach the beach on foot. The other route would be to follow the dirt road until Ammoudi and, then, follow a short and easy path to Preveli. Of course there is also a third route by boat from Agia Galini or Plakias.
