Within close distance from Anogia (5km) in the neighboring village of Zoniana lies Sfentoni Trypa Cave, which is one of the largest caves in Greece, located in Skafida between Axos and Zoniana. It can be accessed either from Zoniana or from the road leading to the settlement of Axos. The area is 3.000m2 with an overall length of I45m in a horizontal ground plan. Moreover, it has a runway of 400-500m in length and consists of 16 chambers with an impressive stone decoration (cave pearls, stalagmites, columns, stalactites). It was systematically explored for the first time by the speleologists Ioannis and Anna Petrohilos in 1956 and 1963 respectively. Since then, it has been characterized as a cave of special interest and its utilization was suggested. In the context of this utilization, in 1987 the Ministry of Culture went into excavations, which showed that it was intensively inhabited during the early Minoan Period and occasionally during the Minoan times.
