The uniquely beautiful massifs of Meteora and its monasteries on the top of them are fairly among the monuments of the world’s cultural heritage. The creation of this unique natural phenomenon is dated 25-30 million years ago, when the water of the lake that covered the whole Thessaly until then reflowed and through the valley of Tempi, which was then created, the water ended up in the sea. The sandy and rocky massifs at the bottom of the lake came up to the surface and after the erosion during the centuries they were formed as they are today. This unapproachable natural landscape was proper for the development of monkhood. In the 10th century the first monks were settled on the massifs, while in 1344 St. Athanasios Meteoritis, founder of the monastery “Megalo Meteoro”, names the massif on which he founds the monastery “meteoro”. Since then the name Meteora was established.
