Ancient Lissos seems remote since there isn't a road leading to it and can be accessed only via a trail or by boat. In this plain, conserved in one of the many gulfs in south Crete, was once located a significant city that was destroyed in the 9th century AC. The remains of the temple of Asclepius and the holy spring, which still gushes, are located deep in the valley. The settlement is set on the east slope and lots of statues and coins, which have been found here and indicate the development of the city, are displayed in the Archeological Museum of Chania. Moreover, the traces of a road network that used to connect Lissos with the ancient cities of Elyros and Irtakina is quite visible. Nowadays, the area is called Agios Kirikos. On the 15th of July, a liturgy takes place to honor the Saint (Agios Kirikos) and, then, follows a Cretan feast. You can access the city from Sougia either via the 3km trail or by boat. What is more, you can also go swimming in the secluded pebbly beach of Lissos.
