A walk on the covered Dimotiki Agora (Municipal Market) of Chania will give you a full picture of the local products such as the Cretan graviera and kefalograviera cheese, the mizithra cheese that is used in the dish dakos accompanying Cretan barley rusks which are also encountered in Crete in many shape variations and origin. You'll find thyme honey, herbs that grow only in Crete as malotira and dictamo both with beneficial properties and all olive products from the excellent Cretan olive oil and olives to soaps and objects from olive wood.
Visiting a bakery you can find kalitsounia (traditional small pies stuffed with myzithra cheese and herbs), lychnarakia (savory pastries stuffed with a cream made of cheese) and of course many kinds of rusks.
Looking at the menu of a restaurant you will defenately notice the Cretan stamnagathi, the tsigariasto (meat, usually goat cooked with Cretan recipe), apaki or siglino (smoked pork), Chaniotiko boureki ( pie with layers of zucchini, potatoes and mizithra cheese among them), staka (a spread made with butter milk) and of course bourmpouristous chochlious ie snails. All this is meant to be accompanied by local wine and abundant Cretan raki.
