Above the gulf of Kissamos, Ancient Polirinia was built by the Achaeans and the Lakonians around 1100 BC. Its name probably means many "rinea"(sheep). The city had many heydays, minting coins and maintaining its vigor until the Roman times. After its predominance over the area, it had two ports, one in Falasarna and the other in Kissamos. Polirinia was the most significant Dorian city during the Classical times and kept flourishing during the Hellenistic and the Roman times. Several remains from its times of glory are scattered in the homonym village. You can also visit its citadel either by following an up-hill trail from the village or by car, following the road from the village's entrance. You should definitely visit Polirinia, because the combination of its breathtaking view, the atmosphere of the area and the authentic Cretan food, which you can taste there, is irresistible.
