Monastery Chrysopigis is a particularly active monastery, which is located 3km from Chania towards the port of Souda. It is dedicated to Panagia Zoodohos Pigi and attracts masses of worshippers due to its miraculous icon. Since the late 16th century that it was founded, it has been raided, destroyed and renovated several times. Nowadays, the monastery is maintained by the monks, who work on iconography, the preservation of old books and icons, bookbinding, book editing, apiculture, ceroplastics, soap and frankincense concoction as well as the organic farming of the landed property. Moreover, several programs of environmental education are organized for students at all levels.
The monastery is open to the public on a daily basis (8:00-12:00 and 15:30-18:00).
