The only natural lake of Crete is located between Chania and Rethymnon, just 2.5km south of Georgioupolis. The lake is also referred to as Korisia, however the name "Kournas" has prevailed nowadays, from the Arabic word which means lake or bath. Furthermore, it has a depth of 22.5m and hosts many species of birds, cormorants, moor-hens as well as turtles, water snakes and eels. The lake and the surrounding area compose a wonderful ecosystem with rich flora and fauna, and were included in the Natura network in 2000. In the summer, when the waters recede and the path, which encircles the lake (about 3.5 km), is revealed, you can enjoy the nature and go for a swim in the small sandy beaches around the lake. The rented pedalos are a very good idea for exploring and enjoying the lake. On its shore are located several cafés and restaurants.
