Orestiada, the youngest town of Greece and the 2nd biggest in population of the region, is located even northern, 115km from the area’s capital, with a population of 15.246 inhabitants and an impressive town plan.
The ancient Orestiada or ‘Ouskoudama’ was founded according to mythology by Orestes, son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Orestes after killing his mother and Aegisthus, avenging his father’s death, set in motion the anger of the Erinyes, Tisiphone,Alecto and Megaera, goddesses who punished wrongdoings and crimes against family members. Seeking deliverance from them, Orestes received from the Oracle a prophecy to bathe in the spot where the three rivers united. In search of this place, in the known at that time world, he discovered he had to bathe at the point of the confluence of the rivers Evros, Tountzas, and Ardas. After his purification by this act, he built Orestiada in a nearby location.
Old history regarding the town is nonexistent, since it was founded in the beginning of the 20’s. The Greek residents of the area abandoned their houses after the Mudanya Treaty in 1922 and settled in today’s Karagats, which they named Orestiada. However, a year later the inhabitants were forced to leave again, since the Treaty of Lausanne assigned Karagats under the definitive governance of Turkey. Along their migratory route, they built their first houses in the area which is known today as Nea Orestiada.
The modern town went through a period of constant development and is worth wandering around. At Vasileos Constantinou Street, you will find Dasios square which owes its name to the General Governor of Thrace in 1923, Spyros Dasios, who organized the reconstruction of the town. Busts and statues of important personalities are found there, like the one of Ecumenical Patriarch Cyril VI, the first bishop of N.Orestiadas, Polykarpos Varvakis and the hero of the Albanian epic Georgios Stathatos.
