Internationally recognized for its ecological value, the biotope of Dadia Forest spreads amid the region, adding a special kind of beauty and importance. It’s a place of vital importance for the flora and fauna of the area, since here countless species of flora can be found, such as pine trees and oak trees hundreds of years old, but mostly for the many rare species of raptors that live here. Specifically, from the 38 species of raptors living in Europe, 21 have been recorded here, while endangered species trying to find their last refuge in Europe are also found among them in Dadia Forest. Here also live 39 species of reptiles and amphibians. On a WWF initiative, the area has been declared as a ‘Protected Area’ as it has also been officially by the Greek state in 1980. It can be accessed by car up to a certain point while you can organize your visit at the Information Centre which is a few meters away from Dadia. From there you will be transferred to the watchtower where the necessary gear to observe the area, where the animals feed, will be provided. There, park managers leave food for the raptors, which is provided to them by the area’s stock breeders. Best hours for gazing upon the Black vulture, the Griffon vulture and many other raptors and species are during the morning. The spectacle is breathtaking. Nature’s law “survival of the fittest” is applied right before your eyes and although it may sound repulsing, it is in fact a natural link of the food chain.
