The archaeological site of Sami is divided into two sections. High in the eastern hills, towering over the modern-day namesake city, stand a large part of the ancient fortifications and gates, and down in central points of the city of Sami are scattered significant findings that have come to light in excavations. The latter include four ancient cemeteries, parts of coastal walls and traces of a temple. The most imposing and best preserved findings are at Loutro, the onetime city baths, which include a fairly well-preserved part of the Roman aqueduct and a fountain structure. Also rather impressive are the findings from the private homes of the inhabitants of ancient Sami: Mosaic floors with colorful, elaborate representations that adorn the villas testify to a period of prosperity and wealth. Ultimately, the best-preserved remnants of the glory of ancient Sami include the complex of Roman baths, (also known as the Romaiko Vallanio) on Dichaleion Street with its many exquisite mosaics.
