Once the most important defensive and administrative center of the island, this huge medieval castle dates back to Byzantine times. It flourished during the long Venetian occupation of the island, and still preserves elements from that period such as the carved emblems, the imposing ramparts and the steep cobblestone streets. Situated at an altitude of 300 meters, the castle was an ideal lookout against pirates who infested the area. The excellent organization of its interior included public buildings, private homes, warehouses, barracks, churches and many others, traces of which survive today despite the devastating earthquake of 1953. Access to the castle is very easy. About 7 km from Argostoli, by bus or car, above the village Peratata. The castle of Agios Georgios faces the bay of Argostoli, and is perfect for an idyllic journey through medieval Kefalonia.
