In the northeast corner of the island, at a vital geographical location, was found one of the largest Minoan cities, dated back to the period 1550-1220 BC. It spread over 12355 acres, had no city walls and was densely populated. A main street and several perpendicular smaller streets divide the city into nine neighborhoods toward which a complete and perfectly made sewage system is bifurcated. The houses on the main street have decorated facades, skylights and baths, storage rooms, etc. It is said that the town had a temple dedicated to the worship of the Diktean Zeus.
