Idi Range, the well-known Psiloritis, is the natural border between Rethymno and Heraklion as well as the highest mountain on the island. The caves nesting in this massif have many stories to recount from the various periods of the Cretan history, starting with the impressive Ideon Andron in the plateau of Nida narrating the upbringing of Zeus. According to mythology, Rhea hid there the newborn god to save him from his father Kronos, who swallowed his children to maintain his throne. This wild massif, which, as mentioned in ancient texts, was once covered with trees, while currently it has just a few forests of Kermes oaks such as Rouvas Forest, the forest of Vorizion Gorge, while on the lower slopes there are maples, oak trees, arbutuses and lentisks. From its lonely peak, Timios Stavros, at approximately 2456m in altitude, the magnificent view, as mentioned by the mantinada "high on Mount Psiloritis, one day I will climb, where the eagles live, Crete to overlook', includes all the main island, the island of Gavdos, Santorini and further away. The ascent to this bare landscape is not easy due to the high altitude, however there are 4 routes leading there; the easiest one is from Nida Plateau. The marked path E4 will lead you to the top and the stone-built domed chapel of Timios Stavros, where on its feast day (14th September) believers from all over Crete gather for pilgrimage. Despite the difficult conditions of the mountain, numerous shacks (mitata), stone-built shepherds ' huts, and small and big villages are scattered on its slopes. The most known village is Anogia, where renowned Cretan musicians come from, who have sung the proud Psiloritis numerous times: "At Psiloritis's peak, the snow doesn't end, until the old to melt, it starts to snow again." "Zeus was a shepherd on the Anogian Mount, but his house was in Perachori."
