In Rethymno, on the western side of Psiloritis rises Mount Kedros at approximately 1777m in altitude. It might not have tall trees, however due to its low vegetation, which includes herbs, wild flowers, tulips, anemones and much more, it has been included in the network Natura 2000. Between Kedros and Psiloritis, at approximately 450m in altitude, the fertile valley of the Amari is formed. In this beautiful valley, there are many villages, the springs of Platis River that debouches in Agia Galini, the Potami Dam, caves as well as centenarian trees, such as the olive tree in Vryses with a bole perimeter of 22m, which is about 2000 years old. Amari is the center of attraction for botanists due to its variety of rare plants like the Wild Orchid of Crete, while a new kind of edelweiss has been recently detected. It is a botanical park that will definitely draw your admiration, if you decide to visit it.
